Vasectomy Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Vasectomy?

The vasectomy procedure is the male method of sterilisation (permanent contraception) and is a simple and quick procedure to prevent sperm passing into the ejaculation. The sex drive is unaffected or indeed the ability to get erections and ejaculate is completely unaffected by the procedure, and sex may become more enjoyable once the fear of pregnancy is removed.

Does a Vasectomy work?

The Vasectomy is 99% effective. The failure rate is very low - less than 1%, which is much less than failure rates for sterilisation in women.

Who would want a vasectomy?

Anybody who is totally certain that they do not want to father any more children. Mostly family men who do not want any more children and feel it is their responsibility to ensure this does not happen, by choosing a widely accepted form of contraception in a vasectomy.

Does a vasectomy hurt?

As the vasectomy procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, the procedure itself is quick and safe. A mild ache with slight bruising is normal and lasts a few days.

How quickly will I recover from a vasectomy?

Unless your job is very physical, you should be fit to return to work almost immediately. Remember to keep the area dry for about 48 hours and the area well supported with tight fitting underpants. You will need to avoid heavy lifting and exercise for a minimum of 2 and preferably 4 weeks after the operation. Brusing around the area is quite normal and will disappear within a few days.

What is a no scalpel vasectomy?

This is the now preferred method of vasectomy as it has a very low rate of infection and bruising. No scalpel vasectomy is a form of minimal access surgery in which the risk of complications is greatly reduced.

How quickly does it work?

You can not rely on the vasectomy for contraception until two clear semen samples have been obtained. This will usually take around 12 to 14 weeks. Until then, please use alternative contraception methods.

Are there any special instructions on the day?

Shower or bathe but there is no necessity to shave or trim the hair around the area. Wear close fitting pants or speedos rather than boxer shorts. Eat and drink as normal. Expect the appointment to last about an hour. We advise that you come accompanied to avoid the need to drive yourself.

What will the no scalpel procedure involve?

You will have a detailed preoperative review folling which you could proceed to vasectomy if you choose at the time. The vasectomy is performed using local anaesthetic through which the vas deferens is located. It is a simple procedure which lasts about 10- 20 minutes and you could be up and about straight away afterwards. You will stay at our centre for a further 20-30 minutes to allow you to relax with refreshments and have a final chat before you leave.

Vasectomy Advantages?

Permanent contraception results from the vasectomy and an hour of your life will give peace of mind for the remainder of it.

Vasectomy Disadvantages?

It is practically non-reversable.
